Whether in the kitchen, office or other space, a kettle is a vital part of charging your work day. We love kettles at Direct Vacuums, and have plenty as part of our kitchen appliances range.
In our latest blog, we take a look at the importance of the humble kettle, and why you need a good one in your home!
A modern version of an ancient art
Boiling water has been a part of human life for centuries, with our ancestors using this method to help make food easier to eat, taste better and kinder to the stomach.
There is even a school of thought that suggests the human innovation to cook was a pivotal moment in making humans human.
Pots were used by ancient civilisations and it is thought that this was a crucial part of food and drink preparation from this time. There has been evidence found of a Chinese cooking pot called a ‘taofu’. These were made of clay and was used more than 10,000 years ago during the Neolithic Age.
The pot was an ever present in terms of being able to boil water, and obviously still does the job to this day! However, with the advent of the kettle, that process became quicker and more convenient, particularly when it comes to making hot drinks.
Take off of the contemporary kettle
What we recognise today as the modern kettle is a development from the classic stovetop kettle. These boiled water in much same way pots are boiled – with gas from a stove.
From this early development, the birth of the electric kettle happened. This was actually an earlier invention than many people may think, with the first electric kettles made available to the public as early as the 1890s. These early versions however were not exactly as we know them today, as they had a separate compartment for the heating element, as this could not touch the water.
The design of the electric kettle as we know and love it today was really created by a gentleman by the name of Leslie Large. This engineer at Bulpitt & Sons in Birmingham reinvented the heating element to be a wire wound around a core. This was then sheathed in a metal tube, meaning it could be immersed in the water directly, and thus, the modern kettle was born.
There have been hundreds of designs utilising this model ever since, and the contemporary kettle really is a cornerstone of the modern home.
