Ross Taylor, Managing Director A.P Taylor and Direct Vacuums debunks the myths around buying refurbished.
Ever wondered how the world of refurbished appliances works? The newly launched Direct Vacuums has been recently opened up its online doors to hordes of eager consumers who are discovering how to buy big brand names for up to 70% less versus buying brand. It’s no new phenomenon, but Direct Vacuums, with their exclusive contracts with the biggest brands, specialised teams of reconditioning engineers and a 12 month warranty on all their refurbished appliances is helping debunk the myths around buying refurbished.
Ross Taylor, CEO of AP Taylor, the business behind Direct Vacuums provides some insights on how exactly the refurbished process works.
Where do your refurbished products come from?
My business AP Taylor has been around for over 15 years and is the UK’s largest authorised online sellers of manufacturer refurbished and graded products for brands including Electrolux, Hoover, VAX, Zanussi, Morphy Richards and many more. The branded appliances which are sold via retailers and are returned within a 30 day returns policy are then shipped to our warehouse, restored to as good as new and resold for up to 70% less than the retail price.
Who are Direct Vacuums?
Direct Vacuums are a subsidiary of AP Taylor and sells refurbished household appliances through our EBay and Amazon store and we’ve recently in June 2015 launched our new online store.
You say as good as new, but is it really?
Yes, it really is! We don’t actually deal with used products here at Direct Vacuums. All of the products that are returned to us, have been returned within a 14-28 day return policy. It may be the packaging was damaged, the buyer changed their mind on the colour, there was some markings on the product, the performance or product wasn’t as expected, or the delivery went wrong. It is quite a different scenario to ‘pre-loved’, faulty or second hand goods. In many instances, the refurbished products sold by Direct Vacuums may have only been used once or sometimes not at all and returned within the retailers 28 day no quibble return policy.
What does refurbished actually mean?
When the branded products arrive at our warehouse, regardless of whether it’s an instance of damaged packaging, minor cosmetic marks on the appliance or it has been used once within the 30 day period and there was a mechanic fault, ALL of our appliances go through our stringent reconditioning process.
Our specialist reconditioning engineers who have a wealth of experience will put the appliance through electrical PAT testing. All removable parts will be stripped down and cleaned thoroughly. Our job is to essentially test and restore the appliance as close to original condition as possible, with best efforts to remove signs of use and wear and tear and making it sparkling clean.
When the appliance has undergone all quality and performance testing and been thoroughly cleaned and returned to its original packaging, we will then list the product for sale across our various channels including EBay, Amazon and our website

Why such a huge difference in price when buying refurbished versus brand new?
We’re able to pass on dramatic savings on the latest products because of our unique, exclusive agreements with some of the best known brands in the business. As the UK’s largest authorised reseller for Electrolux, Vax and Zanussi, we are able to take advantage of economies of scale, shared warehouse operations with the long established and highly reputable AP Taylor and offer huge savings in order to move stock quickly through the system.
We recommend buyers beware of unscrupulous sellers out there who may be passing off second hand products as fully refurbished. With Direct Vacuums, you can be rest assured you’re dealing with the UK’s biggest refurbished warehouse, trusted by the big brands and all of Direct Vacuums refurbished products are backed with a 12 month guarantee.
How do people overcome the ‘ick’ factor?
The refurbished appliances external look that may bear some minor cosmetics wear and tear is one of the reasons why people may not consider buying a reconditioned appliance. Others buyers may have made up their minds not to buy refurbished because of the ‘ick’ factor, i.e. I am not using someone else’s vacuum cleaner that may have collected hair, dirt and dust.
However, Direct Vacuums appliances are those that have been returned with a 30 day returns policy and in many instances the products may have only been used once, or not all and returned for a myriad of reasons. Buyers can also be reassured that regardless of the nature of the return, the appliance undergoes the same stringent engineer checks and refurbishment process to restore the product to its original status in terms of performance, looks and cleanliness. If there is a few scuff marks, Direct Vacuums will make it abundantly clear on all product descriptions.
